It is simplistic to argue that a shift in content away from the humanities and social sciences to vocational and technical education will improve technological innovation and economic progress. There are two reasons for this: (1) In the dimension of intellectual processes, humanities and social sciences education equips young graduates for innovative thinking. (2) Innovation is a process that is quintessentially social; therefore a humanities and social sciences component in education that improves social and institutional functioning also im proves innovation.
